DAVID STEELE
We recently caught up with David. He is one of those rare individuals who lives life with left and right brain balance–business minded and impressively artistic. One of our favorite of his creations is flour + water. It has been one of the most sought after reservations in San Francisco ever since opening in 2009. Without fail he has something very interesting in the works and this recent conversation was no exception.
Here is how he sees things:
What do you love about what you do for a living?
With flour + water, and the restaurant business in general, I love that it is the most dynamic and multi dimensional business that exists. A creative and practical confluence of food (of course) and architecture, design, music, staff and business. It lets me be creative and soulful in our offering, while abiding by solid business principles. It rewards you for doing things differently. An amazing challenge.
How long have you being doing it?
Worked in restaurants from the age of 16 to 24. Then spent two decades working on Wall Street. I came back to the restaurant business when we opened flour + water 4 years ago.
What place(s) in your current hometown do you go to find inspiration?
Mountainbiking! There is nothing I’d rather do. I spend as much time as I can on the trails near Woodside and Fairfax. I am also in love with street art and graffiti in Mission District.
Is there an upcoming project you can share with us?
In two weeks we are opening our second Salumaria. Our deli concept. I’ve also been fantasizing about opening a hotel in the Mission District of San Francisco.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I am a struggling first time playwright. The working title of my project is “Of love and insanity”. I hope to have it out next summer.
What is your favorite wearable/fashion item?
Varvatos designed Converse All Stars
